Course Description
STEP 1: In-Person Training
There is no substitute for in-person training with a certified firearms instructor. Every responsible gun owner should take an in-person class to truly sharpen his or her skills, build confidence and forge a protector mindset.
Requirements: Take a two-hour in-person class of your choice with a certified firearms instructor. Simply return to this section of your Protector Academy training to add your course into your account after completion.
Need help finding an instructor?
Search the USCCA Training Site for an instructor near you. Or find a nearby USCCA Partner Range that can help you complete your training. (The in-person training requirements for this qualification can be completed at any gun range).
STEP 2: Complete your Level 01 Shooting Qualification: Basic Handgun Marksmanship
Course Overview: Marksmanship is a crucial foundation for any responsibly armed American. Now that you have completed your foundational training, it is time to test yourself on the range.
(Note: The preferred method for completing this training is to go to a USCCA Partner Range and with a certified firearms instructor.)
Remember, always follow ALL safe gun handling procedures and safety rules while you complete any drills.
***Always comply with any additional rules for your range***
Required Gear & Supplies: You will need (1) USCCA Silhouette Target (available in the USCCA Store) with 9-inch center, (50) rounds of ammunition in any caliber and your firearm.
Train with your personal self-defense firearm whenever possible.
Success Criteria: You must get at least 70% of your hits (35 or more) inside the 9-inch center.
Course of Fire: You will now complete a series of basic handgun marksmanship challenges meant to test your accuracy at different ranges. There will be NO time limits. This is purely a test of your accuracy with your self-defense handgun.
- Stage 1: Put your target 3 yards away from you on the range. Fire 10 rounds at the 9-inch center circle.
- Stage 2: Move your target until it is 5 yards away from you. Fire 10 rounds at the 9-inch center circle.
- Stage 3: Move your target until it is 7 yards away from you. Fire 10 rounds at the 9-inch center circle.
- Stage 4: Move your target until it is 10 yards away from you. Fire 10 rounds at the 9-inch center circle.
- Stage 5: Move your target until it is 15 yards away from you. Fire 10 rounds at the 9-inch center circle.
Assessment: If you successfully placed 70% of your shots (35 or more) inside the 9-inch center target, you have completed your Level 01 USCCA Qualification. (“Inside” does not include breaking the ring; shots must fully be inside the ring to count.)
If you failed to get at least 35 shots inside the 9-inch center, consult with a certified firearms instructor who will be able to diagnose any accuracy issues and help you correct them. Then shoot your qualification drill again.
